Vera Mae Brown, 78 of Russell died Sunday, April 25, 2010 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.
Vera Mae was born July 13, 1931 in Russell, Kansas the daughter of Jacob and Mary Katherine (Miller) Ulrich. She grew up and attended school in Russell.
Vera Mae was united in marriage to Billy F. Brown on August 3, 1946 in Natoma, Kansas.
This union was blessed with six children; Connie, Dennis, Sheila, Judith, Stacy and Todd. They made their home in Russell. Billy preceded her in death on March 29, 2005.
Vera Mae was a devoted wife and mother. There was nothing more important than taking care of her children and grandchildren. She was always available to babysit the grandchildren or attend their sporting events. She was a fabulous cook and baker. She enjoyed cross stitching and making quilts.
Vera Mae was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Russell. She also belonged to the Russell V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She delivered Meals On Wheels. She enjoyed playing scratch games, going to the Russell Senior Center and was known as the “Queen of the Bingo Parlor”.
Surviving family include her six children, Connie Dumler and husband Marty, Dennis Brown and wife Wanda, Stacy Brown and Todd Brown and wife Stephanie all of Russell, Kansas, Sheila Dreiling and husband Jim of Pace, Florida and Judith Tilton of Cleveland, Oklahoma; 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters and a great grandson, Joshua.
Celebration of Vera Mae’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, April 29, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow in the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. Wednesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Memorials have been established with St. John Lutheran Church and the Russell Senior Center.
