Grace Eleanor Rees Wilson, 104, a resident of Russell for over 70 years, died on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007 at the Russell Regional Hospital. She was born August 22, 1903 on the family homestead in Wichita County, Kansas in Leoti, the daughter of William G. and Sophia (Rewerts) Rees.

She was united in marriage to Loftus Wilson on June 22, 1922 in Leoti and from this union they were blessed with a daughter named Marcie.  Loftus preceded her in death in 1961.  She and Loftus moved to Russell in 1936, when he opened and managed the Scheufler Supply Company, located on 6th Street across from the post office, which later became S & W Supply.  She worked in the office, then later became a full time homemaker.

Grace was the last survivor of six siblings – Howell, Mary, Margaret, Ruth & Emma -- who were raised on a ranch which was homesteaded by their parents 15 miles southeast of Leoti.  Their father, William Rees, a rancher and farmer, also served as a County Commissioner.  Mother, Sophia Rees, was a Sunday school teacher and midwife.  The children walked a mile everyday to attend a one-room schoolhouse, and the family moved to town when they approached high school age.  She was a graduate of Wichita County Community High School and played on the championship women’s basketball team with sisters Mary and Margaret.

Grace was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell; she was active in UMW and served on the interior design committee at the time the present church was constructed.  The couple built the family home at 650 Oakdale in 1941.  She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, and painting but most of all enjoyed spending time with her family and granddaughter.

Survivors include a daughter Marcie W. Adler and husband, David, of Arlington, Virginia, a granddaughter Lauren E. Adler and husband Mark Kotzer of Seattle, Washington; two nieces and a nephew, Janet S. Halloran of Topeka, John R. Ley and wife, Jane, of Denver, and Jane S. Ley of Arlington, Virginia.  In addition, there are six great nieces and nephews and seven great-great nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Grace’s life is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Trinity United Methodist church with Pastor Warren Hett officiating.  Burial will follow the service at the Russell City Cemetery.  Visitation will begin from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, November 30, 2007 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with family present from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday evening.  A memorial has been established with the Russell Regional Hospital and may be sent to the mortuary at 610 N. Maple * Russell, Kansas 67665.  Condolences may be sent via email by going to www.pvpmortuary.com.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the arrangements.
