Hubert Harry Keil, 88 of Milberger and Russell areas, died November 25, 2007, at his home in Milberger. Hubert was born June 5, 1919 at the family farm in Milberger, the son of Victor E. and Elizabeth (Popp) Keil. He attended Milberger country schools and spent nearly all his life in the Milberger area.
In 1940 he enlisted into the United States Navy and was proud and excited to serve his country and see the world. While still in the Navy he was eager to learn he would be stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Little did he know that on a quiet Sunday on December 7, 1941 that he and the entire U.S. Naval fleet would be viscously attacked by the Japanese, which would be the beginning of World War II for the United States. Hubert’s ship was badly hit by the Japanese but he survived the attack. After the attack was over it was up to Hubert and others like him to help aid the wounded and tend to those who were killed. After the war, he moved back to his home in Milberger. He spent the rest of his days engaged in farming and raising his cattle. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Galatia and a proud member of the V.F.W. Post #6240 and the American Legion Post #99 both of Russell.
A memorial service for Hubert will take place at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, December 15, 2007 at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas. Cremation preceded the services and there will be no burial following the service . A memorial has been established with the Russell County Veterans Memorial and may be left with Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary * 610 N. Maple * Russell, Kansas 67665. Condolences may be left at the mortuary or sent via email by going to www.pvpmortuary.com. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the arrangements.
